Glorious Golden Milk

The wonders of this ancient drink await you if you have not tried it yet! Turmeric, the spice that makes the drink golden, and the source of all the goodness, has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinally. If you’ve ever used turmeric you may be well aware of its staying powers, on your clothes! But it also has great powers for your health.

Golden milk is made of turmeric, black pepper, a non-dairy milk and a touch of honey. Below we will break down the benefit of each element:


Turmeric has compounds called curcuminoids of which curcumin is the one most important to us. Curcumin is a very powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant (you can read more about it here). Many illnesses are, at the very least, exasperated by our body being inflamed because we eat many foods that are creating this environment in our body. You may not even know you are inflamed, it’s not like we have a gage to read, but you may be suffering from something of which this is an underlying cause. Types of foods that cause inflammation are sugar, dairy, fried foods, refined flour, artificial sweeteners, artificial additives, non-grass-fed meats, processed meats…and so on, you can read more here about foods that cause inflammation.

As you can see, eating foods and spices that have anti-inflammatory powers are very beneficial to us, and turmeric is one of those glorious foods!

  • High cholesterol
  • Upset stomach
  • Diabetes
  • Viral infections
  • Anti-carcinogen
  • Regulate metabolism

Black Pepper

Black pepper interestingly has been found to increase the bioavailabilty of curcumin to your body by 2000%, yes, you read that right! So while the black pepper adds a nice flavor to the drink, it is barely noticeable and there to help your body absorb and use the curcumin.

Non-dairy milk

As you read above, dairy is an inflammatory and the benefit of turmeric is that it is helping us be less inflamed. To that end it is counterproductive to use a dairy milk as the base for golden milk. At the café we use almond milk as that is our alternative, but you could use other non-dairy milks to if you are making it at home.


As widely used and amazing as turmeric is, it is quite earthy tasting when it’s the main ingredient. A splash of honey makes all the difference and really changes the flavor profile into a delicious tasting drink. At the café, as in all our drinks, we do not add a lot of honey, you can always add more yourself!

How we offer it:

We offer golden milk in three ways:

  • Hot
  • Cold
  • With sparkling water instead of almond milk (my favorite, especially on hot days!)
